PRINCETON ELM
NEW AMERICAN  ELM--Highly resistant to Dutch elm disease

Princeton American Elm is an old American elm cultivar highly resistant to Dutch Elm Disease - (D.E.D.). Introduced into commerce in 1922, DNA tests show that it probably came from a 280 year old elm tree that Vice President Aaron Burr was buried under in a Princeton cemetery. Work done by A.R.S. geneticist Dr. Denny Townsend and horticulturalist Susan Bentz at the National Arboretum showed that varieties Valley Forge, (Jefferson NA3487), Princeton,  Delaware and R18-2 showed the highest tolerance to D.E.D., followed closely by New Harmony.

VALLEY FORGE ELM
NEW AMERICAN  ELM--Highly resistant to Dutch elm disease

Valley Forge:  A new American elm  variety released by the US USDA National
Arboretum in 1995 after 20 years of research. American elm Valley Forge  possess the classic
American elm tree shape, upright-arching. Transplants easily, prefers rich, moist soil and exhibits tolerance to air pollution and poor soil conditions. American elms are pH tolerant and show good soil salt tolerance. Elm trees are fast-growing and they adapt to adverse climates and other conditions that can be fatal to maples, oaks and other popular landscape choices. Ulmus Americana  grows 60 to 80 feet and some  are known to exceed 110 feet with a spread of 1/2 to 2/3's the height. Hardy in zones 5 through 7. Leaves are a lustrous dark green in summer turning yellow in the fall. Release of this new American elm variety presents a great opportunity  to plant an old American favorite.

In the last 70 years Dutch elm disease (D.E.D.) has killed more than 70 million elm trees (95%) here in the United States. It is widely believed this disease came to the US from France in the 1930's. To date the most widely available elm with the greatest resistance to D.E.D. is Valley Forge. The search continues for even greater resistant varieties.
We ship and plant all year.
