THUJA PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

PEAT POTS:   CUT PEAT POTS APART WHEN THEY ARE SHIPPED IN TRAYS. DO NOT TEAR THEM APART.

DO NOT REMOVE NET FROM PEAT POTS.

DO NOT PICK UP PLANTS BY THE TOP.

POTTED PLANTS:  WHEN REMOVING PLANTS FROM A POT TURN THEM UPSIDE DOWN AND GENTLY

TAP FROM POTS OR CUT POTS DOWN THE SIDE.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

*USING ROUNDUP, SPRAY A 5’ WIDE SWATH THE LENGTH OF THE ROW THE TREES ARE GOING IN TO.

DON’T LET GRASS GROW CLOSE TO TREES. KEEP A CIRCLE AT LEAST 2-3 FEET  OF BARE GROUND OR MULCHED AREA WITHOUT WEEDS. GRASS INHIBITS YOUNG TREE GROWTH AND WILL KILL THEM. CLICK HERE FOR AN EXCELLENT STUDY ON GRASS INHIBITING TREE GROWTH.

*WAIT A FEW DAYS, THEN TILL THE GROUND THE LENGTH OF THE ROW 5’ WIDE AND 5-6” DEEP FOR QUARTS.  (3” DEEP FOR PEAT POTS, AND 7-9 INCHES DEEP FOR GALLONS.  10-12” FOR 3 GALLONS.  12-15” FOR 5 GALLONS.)  ROOTS START OUT GROWING LATERALLY, THEN DOWN, SO THE SOIL NEEDS LOOSENED AROUND THE TREE, BUT DO NOT DIG OR PLANT DEEPER THAN THE ROOT BALL.

*USE OSMOCOTE 14-14-14 SLOW RELEASE FERTILIZER.  MIX IT AROUND IN THE HOLE—1 TSP FOR PEAT POTS, 2 TSP FOR QUARTS, 1 TBSP FOR 1-5 GALLONS.  THIS IS TO BE USED ONCE EVERY 4 MONTHS.  DO NOT LET IT GET ON THE LEAVES.  (If using root stimulator, do not use the Osmocote.  Over fertilization can cause burning on the tree.  Root stimulator is to be used only twice a year, and for the first year only.)

*PLANT WITH THE TOP OF THE ROOT BALL, LEVEL WITH THE SOIL LINE.  NEVER PLANT TO DEEP

*USE MULCH THE WIDTH AND LENGTH OF YOUR TILLED GROUND.  2-3”DEEP.  KEEP IT 2-3” AWAY FROM THE TRUNK OF THE TREE.  (ALSO KEEP THE GRASS AND WEEDS AWAY AS THEY GROW IN CLOSER OVER TIME.)

*IF THE TEMPERATURE IS HOT, WATER DAILY AS LONG AS THE SOIL DRAINS WELL.

*REDUCE WATERING FREQUENCY AS THE PLANTS BECOME ESTABLISHED. ( A SOAKER HOSE WORKS GREAT)  BETTER YET, FOR A LONG AREA USE A DRIP LINE WITH EMITTERS ON 18 INCH CENTERS.  CONTACT A LAWN IRRIGATION OUTLET FOR INFORMATION OR GO TO WWW. RAINBIRD.COM, TYPE IN YOUR ZIP CODE FOR A DEALER NEAR YOU. Or call them at 1-800-724-6247. ANOTHER GREAT DRIP LINE SUPPLIER IS WWW.DRIPWORKSUSA.COM.

*FOR THE FIRST FEW WINTERS FLUFF STRAW AROUND THEM TO GIVE ADDED WINTER PROTECTION.  ACTUALLY PUT A LOT OF STRAW AROUND THE TREES FOR WIND PROTECTION.

Winter planting instructions and dates

Plant all sizes all Winter in ZONES 8 & 9 SOUTH—which include CA, FL, Southern NC, SC, Southern GA, Southern TX, and Southern AL

Mulch well and fluff straw around foliage in extreme cold.

Green Giants should grow most of the Winter in zones 7 & 8.

Photosynthesis will occur in 45°F or above. G Giant is hardy to -25°F.

Water all evergreens in dry Winters and Summers.

IN ZONE 5-7:  Wait until April to plant or until severe freezes is over. These grow all winter in heated greenhouses and if exposed to cold temperatures it will winterkill all new growth.

Summer Planting

All our plants are container grown. Therefore we ship and plant all summer. Just add water.

Some of our customers have used a fast release field fertilizer, lawn food, or fast release garden fertilizer on new plants. This has burnt the roots and caused blackening or browning of the foliage and sometimes death. We use a slow release fertilizer (Osmocote  from the W R Grace Company). Almost any analysis will work, i.e.. 14-14-14 or 18-6-12, etc. You can also use something like Miracle Grow but apply only as recommended, better yet use 1/2 the recommended rate and the other 1/2 a month later.

Water well and they won't suffer any transplant shock

Directions for small Peat-Pot plants:  Caution, Do Not use a fast release fertilizer on these small plants,  use Osmocote or dilute Miracle Grow. Caution:  do not remove the netting from around the root-ball, it will bio-degrade naturally

When your plants arrive open the box immediately and gently remove the plants.

Set the plants upright in a shallow pan and add about 1/2 inch of water. The plants are now safe for awhile.

If you do not intend to plant them in a permanent location right away, use a pot or tray that drains well, add 1-6 inches of a good potting mix. Set plants on top of mix. Space plants so they do not touch and do not remove the netting from around the Peat-Pots. Add soil mix up to the top of the Peat-Pots. Plant them in a tray or pot with a good potting mix.

Always keep plants moist.

Set the plants in a slightly shaded area protected from the hot afternoon sun. (The plants are now safe until you decide to plant. The bigger the pot or tray the longer you can wait to plant. These plants were grown in full sun in trays of soil mix, but it is better to put them back in full sun slowly.)

Green Giants in Quart and 1 Gallon containers may be left in their containers until you are ready to plant in a permanent location, but they too must be kept moist and protected from temperature extremes. You can't hardly over-water these Green Giants.

In Winter never let unprotected plants in containers be exposed to major cold temperature fluctuations.

Bury the pots and mulch well or place bark, straw or other protective material around pots.

* THE FIRST YEAR YOU MAY NOT SEE AS MUCH GROWTH AS YOU WILL ONCE THEY GET ESTABLISHED.

* FOR MAXIMUM GROWTH NEVER LET YOUR PLANTS DRY OUT.  THEY ARE TOUGH BUT DROUGHT STUNTS GROWTH.  PROVIDE WATER IN THE WINTER FOR EVERGREENS DURING DROUGHT CONDITIONS.  AFTER THE FIRST FEW YEARS GREEN GIANTS ARE VERY DROUGHT TOLERANT      BUT FOR MAXIMUM GROWTH SOAK THEM EVERY 1-2 WEEKS IN DRY SUMMERS.  GOOD LUCK!
