The pictures shown here are from an Indiana planting of 77 trees, peat pot and quarts, with a good mulch and no weeds. The first year they did fine. I could not figure out what went wrong until the customer told me they were watering a 400 ft row by hand. Really, it is almost impossible to adequately water this many individual plants by hand. With a drip-line this planting would be much larger and all still alive.

To protect your investment in a large planting we RECOMMEND A SIMPLE DRIP-LINE THAT YOU CAN HOOK A HOSE TO ONE  END AND WATER ALL OF THEM EASILY AND KEEP WATERING FOR SEVERAL YEARS TILL THEY ARE THE SIZE YOU WANT. Many people just do not have adequate time to take care of young plants and should consider a drip-line even for a modest planting.

This picture is from a 2006 planting in Michigan, consisting of 25 quart size Green Giants. As you can see there is no drip line installed. The young trees did fine the first year, but some were lost in the summer of 2007. Once the Green Giant gets well established they are very tough, BUT STAY AHEAD OF WATERING WITH AN EASY DRIP-LINE.

THESE GREEN GIANTS WERE PLANTED IN JUNE 2001 IN VIRGINIA WITH OUR 18-24 INCH QUART GREEN GIANTS. The customer killed all the grass and weeds around the planting with Round-Up and installed a drip-line for irrigation and did not mulch. These pictures were taken in January of 2006. The gentleman in the photo is over 6 feet tall. This planting is now 12 - 14 feet tall.

I think Round-Up and no mulch is a lot easier and just as good. If you do mulch you still have to kill the weeds that germinate or creep in. As the Green Giants grow the lower limbs will shade out the encroaching grasses.
